A few more important things to know
-
Books
-
Look for books in our library by going to the library website (library.hanover.edu) and entering some search terms into the "WorldCat" search box. For example, to see if our library carries Malcolm Gladwell's book Blink, type "Blink Malcolm Gladwell" into the search box.
-
Dissertations
-
You will occasionally see articles published in Dissertation Abstracts International. These are dissertations, tend to be expensive to get (around $50) and are usually hundreds of pages long. Generally, if the dissertation really worked out, the results will be published elsewhere. You can screen out dissertations by selecting the "Exclude Dissertations" box in the expanded search option page.
-
Full-text articles
-
When it comes to looking for full-text articles, do not sacrifice quality for availability. Don't just go with articles you can download immediately if there are better articles available through inter-library loan.
-
Be persistent
-
PsycINFO is not perfect. It does occasionally overlook an article that it should catch, so try searching with multiple search terms in multiple fields (title, abstract, etc.) and even search Google or Google Scholar before giving up.
Homework
To help you internalize the information from this tutorial, I have created an assignment. Go to the Moodle page for this course and look for "PsycINFO Exercise" in the assignments for this week.
