CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Movies as Equipment for Living: This research area explores how a symbolic, narrative medium such as film can be consciously applied by viewers to their everyday lives. I am currently working with a data set of 48 open-ended interviews in which participants reflected on the role that movies have played in their lives. This interdisciplinary research draws on such areas as narrative psychology, mass communication, autobiographical memory, film studies, symbolism, and psychoanalysis.

Music as Equipment for Living: This project is an off-shoot of the above approach. I am working with a data set of 500 open-ended written responses to an on-line questionnaire in which Bob Dylan fans described what Dylan’s music has meant to them personally.

Cinematic Representation of Mental Health Professionals: This research project employed a content analysis procedure to explore how mental health professional motivations are portrayed in popular film. An article has been written and is currently under review.
