Skin Senses Testing I: Relative Pressure Sensitivity
  • Materials and Apparatus: von Frey-type aesthesiometer
  • Procedure:
    • Press bristle until it flexes slightly.  Hold for 2 seconds
    • Then subject report whether they can feel it or not
    • Use MOL: 3 ascending and 3 descending staircases
    • 8 sites:  volar pad of index finger, pack of hand, top of forearm, bottom of forearm, lips cheek, back of neck and calf
  • Results
    • Graph and compare to data in text.  What is most sensitive?  Why?
2
Skin Senses Testing II: Two-Point Threshold
  • Materials and Apparatus: three point or two point aesthesiometer
  • Procedure:
    • Pick three regions from experiment I, one of low sensitivity, moderate, and high sensitivity.
    • Lightly touch with both points.  Subject reports if feels one or two.
    • MOL: 3 times.  Start new stair case 5 mm beyond where stop.
  • Results:
    • Graph in bar graph, compare to last results, those in book.
    • Why might these sensitivities change this way.

Skin Senses Testing III: Temperature Sensitivity
  • Materials and Apparatus: 2 water pans, immersion heater, thermometer, heat cylinders, handles, ink pad, grid stamp
  • Procedure:
    • Underside of arm.  Apply stamp, use two one a sheet of paper for recording, one for cold probes and one for warm.
    • Cold water 55-65 F, and warm is 110-120F
    • Draw out probe, dry, apply to a dot on grid, record response.  Do a few with that probe, not in any particular order.
    • Alternate temp probes every few trials
  • Results:
    • Big diagram and summarize the data
